We realize that many people are unsure what steps to take when a death occurs. The necessary steps usually depend on the location and circumstances. It is important that you understand what should be done, and we want to make sure that you have the information required to help you make these important decisions. We also encourage you to contact us to plan in advance - relieving you and your family of the emotional and financial responsibilities of arranging a funeral. Unanticipated Death at Home or Elsewhere
In these situations, you should immediately contact 911 and or Gephart Funeral Home; police and emergency medical personnel will then determine the appropriate steps to take. Generally, the authorities can release your loved one directly to our home, so that preparations may begin. In some situations, however, your loved one may need to be taken to the Medical Examiner’s office; this occurs when the cause of death may not yet be known.
Hospital/Care Facility or Hospice
If you have a loved one at a hospital or care home (nursing/convalescent), or under the care of Hospice, we strongly suggest that you provide the facility or nurse with Gephart's name and telephone number. The medical staff can arrange the necessary paperwork for you; oftentimes, you will be required to complete release forms. Many times, when a loved one is under the care of a Hospice nurse, the family will contact us to plan arrangements in advance so that all details are addressed.
If the death occurs out of state, you should first call Gephart Funeral Home at (989) 686-2291. We can make all arrangements for you, including the necessary paperwork. We will help you with the entire process.
This is a basic explanation of your options in certain circumstances. If you would like further information or have some questions, please feel free to call us at (989) 686-2291, or we may be reached via email at: [email protected]
