In 1891, Henry Ward Beecher Hunter began a business in White County to serve the needs of grieving friends and neighbors. H.B., along with Fate Quarles, started a dry goods store that sold funeral merchandise. In those days, families did their own funerals. The store, located in what is now known as Jongee's Gifts & Fine Furnishings, provided materials to make a casket. Hunter Funeral Home became one of the first licensed funeral homes in the state of Tennessee.
