William “Bill” Coverdill Dale, 87, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020 at Community Hospice St. Vincent’s Riverside following a struggle with kidney failure.

Bill was born on April 1, 1933 in Girard, Illinois and son of the late LeRoy Coverdill and Norma Goode Coverdill. From a young age, he was passionate about fishing. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, Linda and participating in sharing music.

Bill pursued his bachelor’s degree from Trevecca Nazarene College and was a member of a quartet, singing at many churches. He received his bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville University in 1959 and while attending JU, he had a radio program that updated students and faculty. He received his master’s degree from Appalachian State Teachers College and pursued his doctorate in guidance & counseling from the University of Georgia. When he returned to Jacksonville, he taught mathematics and science at Oceanway Junior High, guidance counselor at Ribault High School and Andrew Jackson High School and assisted many in obtaining their GED/high school diploma from Central Adult School. He also assisted the U.S. Navy military in transferring credits for work history towards obtaining their high school diplomas. He wrote a million-dollar grant for vans to be used in rural Georgia counties for guidance & counseling. His educational career has continued as a Professor with Virginia State College.

Bill also managed and worked along side his family at Don Wilson Mobile Homes on Lem Turner Road. After retirement, Bill continued his civic duty and became the Director of the Speech & Hearing Center and was certified to administer hearing tests to workers at plants like Anheuser Busch and Bacardi. He was President of ARC, member of the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Medal for community service and was a founding member of the Riverview Volunteer Fire Department. He was an advocate for the United Way of Jacksonville.  Bill lived in Jacksonville for most of his life and spent summers with his wife of 56 years, at their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother: Fred Coverdill and brother-in-law, Don Wilson. Surviving family include his devoted and loving wife, Linda Dale; 1 devoted son & daughter-in-law: Les & Stacy Dale; 2 grandchildren: Cheyenne (Branden) Mitchell and Marlin Dale; 3 great grandchildren: Ayden, Remington and Madeline; 1 devoted sister: Mabel Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Dale’s family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. A celebration of life service will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Peeples Event Center, 14165 N. Main Street with Dr. Larry R. Gillespie, officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Dinsmore Cemetery.

Bill leaves behind a loving family that will miss his smiling face and his immense love for them.
