Robert McCarthy, “Papa”, Gy Sgt., Retired USMC 20 years and a Korean and Vietnam veteran, passed away on April 2, 2018 at the age of 89. He was the husband of Marilyn A. McCarthy.
Mr. McCarthy was born in Boston and raised and educated in Quincy. He served with the 1st Marine Division in the Korean War from 1952-1953 and with the 1st Marine Air Wing in Vietnam from 1965-1966. Gunnery Sgt. McCarthy was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal Combat “V” for service in Vietnam. He worked for 22 years with the U.S. Postal Service as employer ambassador program coordinator, dealing primarily with alcohol and drug issues. His territory was based in Brockton and covered all of Cape Cod.
Mr. McCarthy is a life member of St. John’s Parish in Quincy where he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was an avid golfer, gardener and enjoyed daily walks at West Dennis Beach.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four daughters, Kelle Charpentier of Plymouth, Pamela Maybruck of Plymouth, Patricia D’Allessandro and her husband Thomas of Plymouth and Robin Culver and her husband Steven of Harwich. He also leaves six grandchildren, Lauren D’Allessandro, Michael and Steven Charpentier, Fallon and Kelsi Culver and Maxwell Maybruck, as well as several nieces and nephews. Robert was a friend of Bill W for 58 years. He was a true inspiration to many.
A Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 10th at 10 am at St. Pius X Church, Station Ave. in South Yarmouth.
