In Memory of Neville Wayne “Speedy” Delapenha
Neville Delapenha was born on August 17, 1939 to Vernon “Ferdi” and Vivian “Viola” Delapenha in Mandeville – in the Manchester parish of Jamaica, West Indies. Speedy, as he was affectionately known, was the 3rd of 7 children.
Neville passed away in Lakeland, Florida on August 29, 2019. He is survived by his wife, Deon Cole-Delapenha; sons: Michael, Robert, Kirk, Steve, Mark, “Tex”, Paul, Dennis, Gregory ; daughter, Analeasa. He is also survived by his siblings: Shirley, Lorna, Pauline, 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Neville completed his schooling in Mandeville, Jamaica in the early 1950’s. He used his strong drive for success to start a local taxi business that was very successful and helped to support his wife and children until he migrated to the United States in 1978.
In New York, Neville worked as a welder at Brooklyn Navy Yard and then as a Track Construction Equipment Specialist for New York City Transit Authority for over 25 years. He then retired to Lakeland, Florida in March 2012. His major passions were music, dancing, dominoes, westerns, recreational firearms, jewelry design and making new friends. But most of all he was happiest spending time with his family and being proud of the generations of “Delapenha’s” for which he was the patriarch.
Whether you called him Neville, Nev, Dad, Grandpa, G-pa, Uncle Nev, Dela or Speedy, he touched all of our lives and left a lasting legacy.
