Margaret's Obituary

Margaret “Peg” Blair O’Brien, 90, died at her home in Waterford, CT on Friday, June 7, 2019. She was born in Nashville, TN on March 13, 1929, to Frank and Margaret (Morrison) Blair.

On July 7, 1951, Margaret married ENS William C. Mickle, U.S. Navy. They moved to Virginia Beach, VA, where ENS Mickle soon deployed on a troop carrier in support of the Korean War. After their tour of duty, they settled in Huntsville, AL. Their idyllic life was shattered when Mr. Mickle died unexpected in 1961, leaving behind three small children. In 1964, Margaret married Edmund O’Brien, and moved to Waterford, CT. That marriage ended, but Mrs. O’Brien remained in Waterford.

Mrs. O’Brien graduated from Ward-Belmont, Nashville, in 1947. She attended Vanderbilt University and Connecticut College, completing both her BA and MA in Psychology. She worked as a psychotherapist for Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, where she specialized in issues related to pregnancy, adoption, parenting, and child abuse. In 1995, Mrs. O’Brien was awarded the Outstanding Service Award, receiving national recognition from the Child Welfare League of America for her contribution. She retired in 1997.

An active volunteer throughout her life, some of the organizations Mrs. O’Brien supported include (but are no means limited to) American Red Cross, Junior League of Huntsville, National Society of the Colonial Dames, Waterford Public Library, Friends of Harkness, St. John’s Episcopal Church, New London Garden Club, the Information Booth of New London, the Tuesday Club, the Women’s Club, and the Thames Club. In addition, Mrs. O’Brien continued to play bridge, mahjong, and bowl until shortly before her death.

Mrs. O’Brien is survived by her children William Cooper Mickle II and his wife Stephanie of Old Lyme, CT; Margaret Mickle Benigno of Newport, RI; and Elizabeth Mickle Wroblewski and her husband Michael of Leonardtown, MD. In addition to her children, she is also survived by eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren: Margaret Freeman of Longview, TX, her husband Vance, and their five children Caelan, Ella, Owen, Sarah Cate, and Elliott; Benjamin Benigno of Newport, RI and his two children Christian and Indyca; Brooke Newsome, also of Newport, RI, her husband John, and their four children Natayla, Maeve, Alexandra, and Brettyn; Caryn Mickle of Old Lyme, CT; Benjamin Mickle of New York City and his wife Jessica Dahan; Kristin Bradley of Dallas, TX and her husband Mark; Kathryn Convery of Virginia Beach, VA, her husband Brian, and their son Nolan; and LT Mark Wroblewski, U.S. Navy, also of Virginia Beach, VA and his wife Brianna, who are expecting their first child in August. She was pre-deceased by her parents and husband, William C. Mickle.
