Joel Walton (89) died 6/3/20 at Summit Medical Center, Hermitage, TN after a brief illness. Born 1/7/1931 to Noon and Emogene Walton in Dorsey, MS. A US Army veteran, he served 2 years during the Korean War and, during that period, married Jeanette Loden. Upon honorable discharge he resumed his education graduating from Memphis State College with a BS Degree in Education.
After serving stints in teaching & education administration in Arkansas and Tennessee, he directed his focus to Special Education, earning a Doctorate Degree in Psychology from the University of Mississippi. He retired from the Tennessee Dept. of Education where he served as Director of Special Education managing all special ed curricula development.
Predeceased by wife, Jeanette and two brothers, Jerry and John.
Survived by sons Jason and Joel Walton of Mt. Juliet; sister-in-law Linda Holcomb (Don) of Fulton, MS; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends and former co-workers who will miss this “dapper” gentleman who always had a witticism to share. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. His ashes will be interred in Fulton, MS alongside the ashes of his wife, Jeanette, at a later date.
