Inez Joan Long, age 86 of Mio, past away from complications of a life-long battle with rheumatoid arthritis on Monday, August 13, 2018 at The Villa at Rose City.

Joan was born Inez Joan Pagel on June 15th, 1932 in Farmington, MI to Leola and William Pagel. Her mother, Leola, passed away shortly after Joan's birth following complications of child birth. Joan was adopted and raised by her aunt and uncle, Harry and Clara Pagel in Farmington, MI. Joan graduated from Farmington High School in 1950, lettering in Choir and Glee Club. She then attended Bronson School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, MI, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1953. She married William F. Long on May 1, 1953 at the Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo, MI. Joan worked at Oakwood Memorial Hospital in Dearborn, MI as a Nurse in the nursery in the maternity ward. She and Bill lived in Taylor, MI and had three sons, Michael, James and Gordon. The Long family moved to Mio, MI in 1967 and Joan became a life-long resident of Oscoda County. She worked part time for seven years in the 1970's at the Rose City Nursing Home as a Nurse and worked one year as a Head Start Nurse for the local school districts. Joan was an active member of the Mio United Methodist Church. She and Bill have owned a cabin on Lake Superior in Paradise, MI and enjoyed vacationing there.

 

Joan is survived by her three sons: Michael D. and Susan M. Long of Saline, MI, James D. Long of Mio, MI and Gordon P. Long and Lois Wilson of Johannesburg, MI. Joan also has seven grandchildren: Daniel Long and Beth Kanous of Southfield, MI, Lauren (Long) and Jake Gaecke of DePere, WI, Casey Long of Chicago, IL, Sean and Jessica Long of Kalkaska, MI, Brianna Long of Greenville, NC, Anamari and John Holcomb of Atoka, OK, Marcilyn Forbes and Chad Thompson of Tampa, FL. Joan also has five great grandchildren: Alice Long, Aksel Gaecke, Bailey Cavanaugh, Kyleigh Cavanaugh, River Holcomb and a sister Linda and Richard Wagner of Fenton, MI and a sister-in-law Carol and Hazen Karp of Tequesta, FL.
Joan was Preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 47 years, William F. Long, who died in November of 2000.

Visitation is at the Mio United Methodist Church, 1101 W. 8th Street, Mio, MI 48647, Friday August 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM until the time of Funeral Service at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Brenda Klacking officiating. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will follow. Interment of Joan with Bill's ashes will be in The United Methodist Church Memorial Garden in Paradise, MI.
