Gartland (“Gar”) Rex was born on May 11, 1939 and passed away on May 9, 2020, two days shy of his 81st birthday, from complications related to dementia. He had lived in Nashville for more than 50 years and for the last 7 months of his life resided at Mary, Queen of Angels, an assisted living facility.

Gar was born in Chicago, the son of Charles Henry Rex and Alice (Doherty) Rex. He grew up in Marblehead, MA and moved to Hendersonville, NC during high school. He attended Belmont Abbey Academy in Belmont, NC and graduated from Hendersonville High School. He moved to Tennessee for college and graduated from Memphis State, before settling in Nashville.

Gar spent most of his career as a very successful independent insurance broker. He founded The Rex Agency in the late 1970s and ran it for 40 years serving clients throughout Middle Tennessee.

Gar was an accomplished athlete during his youth. He started on his school football, ice hockey, and baseball teams. He also enjoyed basketball and had a lifelong passion for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. Later in life he turned his athletic skills to swimming and during the last decade to dancing, most recently with the Night Owls in Brentwood, TN, where he was active until recently.

Gar will be remembered by his family and friends as a genuine, kind, and caring person, who was loved and respected by everyone he met. He loved spending time with his many friends, especially the ladies. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date.

Gar is survived by his sister, Diane Rex Kelly, of Palm Beach, FL; his brother, Michael, of Silva, NC; his niece, Jenna Brinkworth, of Buffalo, NY; his former wife, Lynda Haynie, and his stepson, Tony Jones, of Bell Buckle, TN. His sister, Katherine Rex Chapman, of Midland, TX, predeceased him.
