Donald G. “Don” Kraft, 93, of Wessington Springs passed away Monday afternoon May 4th at the Weskota Manor Avera.
Donald Glenn Kraft was born on April 3, 1927, in Wessington Springs SD to Mamie Christensen and Emanuel Kraft. He was one of seven children. Don attended school in Wessington Springs, graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and was discharged in 1946. On May 29, 1947, Don married Thelma Ankrum. They had eight children: Nancy, Glenn, Leigh, Eileen, Beth, Paul, Gerald and Keith. There was always room for one more and there were often additional children over the summer. Don was a farmer-rancher throughout his lifetime. Time was made for family vacations, traveling along Highway 281 from Canada to Mexico. A lifelong passion was hunting. Dancing--whether square dances or polkas--was also a way to relax and socialize. For many years, he was a 4-H leader. When Don was in his 50’s, he began flying lessons. Don became instrument rated and island hopped his Cessna to Alaska. Don was an active member of Flying Farmers. On May 27, 1989, he married Stella Horsley Linn. The family grew from seven children to 11 children, 34 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma, one child, Glenn, five grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Stella (Horsley-Linn) Kraft, his children, Nancy (Randy Roeder) Kraft, Leigh (Michael) Bartholomew, Eileen (Marvin) Thomas, Beth (Steve) Decker, Paul (Vickie) Kraft, Gerald (Julie) Kraft, Keith (Deb) Kraft, a brother, Lloyd Kraft, sister-in-law Margaret (Hassman) Kraft, foster sister, Wanda (Mike) Estergard, and foster son, David Crandall.
Arrangements are entrusted to Basham Funeral Home, Wessington Springs. The private service for family will be live streamed from the United Methodist Church, Wessington Springs, SD, at 10 a.m. on Friday May 8, 2020. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Wessington Springs SD following the private service.
