Donald Keith Costlow, 81, passed away in his home in Gardner, Kansas on Tuesday November 27, 2018. He and his family held roots in Baxter Springs, Kansas throughout their lives.
Donald “Don” was born on April 18, 1937 in Miller, Missouri to James ”Tobe” and Lela Costlow. Don was raised in Baxter Springs and graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1955. He attended Wichita State University prior to serving in the US Marine Corp from 1959-1963. He worked in the aircraft industries in San Diego and Wichita. He later attended Missouri Southern State College and earned his teaching degree in 1977. He initiated the elementary physical education program for Baxter Springs Public Schools, as well as serving as a football, basketball and track coach for the school system. He later served on the Baxter Public School Board. Don was married to his love Barbara Calame Henry Costlow on Dec 27, 1987. Don and Barbara shared 31 years together before his passing.
Survivors include brother Billie “Bill” Costlow of Baxter Springs, sister Wanda and William “Bill” Youngblood of Broken Arrow, OK, daughter Milinda “Mindy” Costlow of Claremore, OK, daughter-in-law Dianne Costlow Owens of Riverside, CA, daughter Michelle “Shelly” and Raymond Clarkson of Grand Lake, OK, daughter Julienne “Julie” and Travis Makela of Olathe, KS and daughter Jennifer and Kenny Howey of Olathe, KS. Don has 12 grandchildren, Stephannie, Brandon, Jeremy, Garrett, Emily, Sarah, Cody, Zachary, Sam, Ty, Ellie and Arik as well as 9 beloved great grandchildren. He has countless nephews, nieces and extended family.
Preceding him in death include his parents, James and Lela Costlow, brothers Lloyd “Luck,” Charles “Chalk” and Jimmie “Jim” Costlow, his son, Michael “Mike” Costlow, Sisters-in-law Edith, Coralie and Marilyn Costlow.
Don enjoyed sports, fishing, boating and camping at the lake. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to work in his garden. He was very close to his Costlow relatives, enjoying frequent reunions. He studied Baxter history and sports history of the area. He enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. He was a member of First Christian Church of Baxter Springs. He always had a camera in hand to capture special moments in life. Don is most well-known for his love for his daughters and grandchildren as well as his humorous antics and unending sense of humor that left stories for family to share for generations to come.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 30, 2018 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Pastor Jeff Adams and Brian Caswell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lowell Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Pallbearers for the service are; Kenny Howey, Travis Makela, Raymond Clarkson, Garrett Costlow, Brandon Fry, Sam Howey, and Zachary Clarkson. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Clarkson, Byron Calane, and Jeremy Lee. Memorial donations may be made in Don’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association by mailing to 225 N.
