COLUMBUS, KANSAS: Charles E Gatewood, age 86, passed way at 11:45 pm, Sunday, November 4, 2018 at his home following an illness.
He was born February 25, 1932 to Elmer and Pearl (North) Gatewood in Columbus, KS. Charles married the love of his life, LaQueta Joy Forkner on August 10, 1952 in Hallowell, KS, with the couple residing in Oswego before moving to their current residence in Columbus in 1955.
Charles accepted Christ as his Savior and has served as a member of the First Christian Church for many years, including his time as Scoutmaster for Troop 54 and as Farm Club and Little League baseball coach and manager. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 64 years.
Charles served his country as a member of the Naval Reserve for 8 years. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying his Piper airplane from Columbus to Hallowell when he was dating Joy. Charles also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and bowling. He bowled a perfect “300” game at Maple Bowl in an American Bowling Congress sanctioned league. He also enjoyed woodworking and could always be counted on to help with projects at the church or anyone needing help.
Charles worked for the Columbus Post Office for 31 years. As a Rural Letter Carrier, the many children on his route remember meeting him at the mailbox to get their mail and some Double Bubble chewing gum he always had for them.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Floyd Elliott, brother Homer Wayne Gatewood, and sister-in-law Frances (Brown) Gatewood, and brother-in-law Bob Guy.
Charles was a devout family man, and is survived by wife, Joy; sister, Betty Lou Guy of Columbus; and children Doug (Crystal) Gatewood, Galena, KS, Dennis (Terri) Gatewood, Frontenac, KS, DeAnn Smith, Seneca, MO; grandchildren Amber (Reed) Sikkink, Livingston, MT, Beau Gatewood, Galena, KS, Meegan (Jeff) Untereker, Charlotte, NC, Brett (Chelsey) Gatewood, Carl Junction, MO, Stephanie Smith, Seneca, MO, and Chad (Shannee) Smith, Jay, OK; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Rev. John Worley will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Columbus, KS.
The family will receive friends from 6:000 – 8:00 pm, Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
