January 10, 1934 - January 19, 2019
Caroline (Sissy) Stillwell Stevens passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home in Shreveport, Louisiana Jan. 18, 2019 at the age of 85.
Caroline was born in Macon, Georgia Jan. 10, 1934, to Alexander Stillwell and Caroline Stillwell. She spent a charmed childhood in Macon, graduated from Lanier High School, and was enrolled at Mercer University before she married Walt (who she fondly called Sonny) and started her life adventure as an Air Force wife. Caroline and Walt traveled the world on military assignments while raising a family. Ultimately, after retirement, Caroline and Walt settled in Shreveport but spent much of their time at their second home in Sandestin, Florida. Caroline loved the beach and found it to be a place to enjoy the sun on her face and sand in her toes. She and Walt also loved playing golf as often as possible. In their travels, they were fortunate to play in many places all around the world.
Caroline’s life was one of devotion and creativity. She amazed many friends and family members by taking a wilted object and transforming it into a new piece of art. She will always be remembered as beautiful, both inside and out, with her sense of style, elegance and her natural ability to see the special qualities in everyone. All those who knew her, always felt her kindness, comfort, and acceptance.
She was a mom who never stopped being a mom: nurturing, loving, and kind, always making time to support her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her gentle southern drawl will be missed but those who knew her won’t be surprised to hear her voice in their memories, dropping in to say, “Hello, I haven’t forgotten you.” Her legacy of love will carry on with those who are here on earth, and her spirit will continue to support us.
Devoted wife, mother, and matriarch of the family, Caroline is pre-deceased by her grandson, Alexander Stillwell (Bull) Buteau. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Col. Walter Clarence Stevens Jr. Sister, Norma Stillwell Stevens of Macon, GA. Five children, Walter Clarence Stevens III and wife, Shelia of Lawrenceville, GA, William Stillwell Stevens of Minden, LA, Norma Buteau and husband Dennis Traver, daughter Paula Stevens Frierson and husband Chris, and daughter Katie Stevens Lewis all of Shreveport, LA, along with 13 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
A visitation for friends and family will be held Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at First United Methodist Couch Chapel Parlor, 500 Common St/ Head of Texas St., Shreveport, LA. With a memorial service to follow at 11 AM in Couch Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Carl Rhodes. A private burial will be held at Forest Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a memorial donation be made to the charity of your choice.
