Janice Running, beloved Grandmother, Mother, Sister, and Auntie, passed away suddenly on September 2, 2020. She is survived by her three sons, Garry, Bret, and Daniel; their partners, Valerie, Natasha Jenson, and Lillian Mattiaccio; grandchildren Katherine and Bennett Running, and Elsa and Lorna Mattiaccio-Running; three sisters, Donna Gibbish, Diane McGuffee, and Bonnie Cypert; brother Marv Anderson; a host of loving nephews, nieces, and cherished family and friends.
To all who knew her, or encountered her for perhaps just a minute in their lives, she was the living model of grace, kindness, compassion, humility, and warmth. She greeted everyone with the most genuine smile, and her devotion to her family and friends was a most precious gift.
Janice’s life was not without hardship. Yet, the series of losses she endured did nothing to diminish her spirit. She found strength in her family, in her church, and in her hours of volunteering and near-constant offers of support. She possessed an energy none could match, and not once did she ever shrink from assisting both those she loved and those she didn’t know. Her generosity, gift-giving, thoughtfulness, and overwhelming love were daily reminders of what was possible in this world.
Grandma Jan adored her grandchildren, and not a day passed wherein those four didn’t feel her heart racing its way across distances towards them. Each and every one of her pursuits--the books she wrote, the clothes she made, the food she cooked--weren’t just exercises of creativity, but intentional gifts. So many presents, and care packages, and random moments of extreme thoughtfulness will be the tokens and the memories they will take with them for the rest of their lives.
Her heart had no room for grievance, or prejudice, or anger. She was mystified by hatred, saw its destructive power and fought against it each day of her cherished and angelic life. What those of us who knew her and loved her take away now, her greatest gift of all to us, is the example she set--the will to kindness, to empathy, and to understanding and growing in the embracing of life.
