August 17, 1956 - July 25, 2020
Rolando Olivo, 63, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2020.
He was born August 17, 1956 in Harlingen, TX to Jose and Agustina C. Olivo. Blessed with classic looks and charm, he could have easily passed for an actor from Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema. He was both a gifted athlete and a jack-of-all-trades graduating from Harlingen High School in 1975. Throughout his life, he pursued professions that young men can only dream of, a cowboy, a bull rider, a firefighter, a dancehall (The Hanger) manager, as well as serving our country in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was able to travel the globe, and see the world, advancing to the rank of Gunner’s Mate First Class before retiring. Serving in the United States Military was one of his proudest accomplishments. After his retirement, he continued to live in Norfolk, Virginia where he worked as a repair technician for assisted living communities. In his spare time while living in Norfolk, he would cook for the elderly in his building and made many friends. He would then return to Harlingen to be with family and remain until he passed. He spent his leisure time cooking, telling jokes, hunting, fishing, and playing pool, all of which he could be considered an expert. He also gave his time helping his fellow veterans understand their benefits as a Service Officer through the American Legion, Post 205, and also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2410. He spent his final years surrounded by family, old friends and his loving girlfriend, Mary Atkinson. Roland will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his loving family, girlfriend Mary Atkinson; children, Rolando (Elissa) Olivo Jr., Julie Marie Ramirez; grandchildren, Gabriella, Gavin, Graden Cortez and Nathan Charles Olivo; siblings, Manuela (Delfino) Flores, Jose (Sara) Olivo, Javier (Diana) Olivo, Rogelio (Janie) Olivo, Maggie Long, Edelmiro (Karen) Olivo, Marta (Daniel) Ramon, Marvelia (Tom) Butler, Efren Olivo, and Sergio Olivo, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roland is preceded in death by his parents Jose and Agustina C. Olivo; sister, Elma Svatos, and brother, Saul Olivo.
