Robert's Obituary

Robert S. Barranco, Sr. “Bob” age 70, died of cancer at his home on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 after a lengthy illness. He was born and raised in the Baltimore area. In 1945 his parents built a home in Beverly Beach, Anne Arundel County, where he spent most of the summers during his childhood and early adult years. Graduated from McDonogh School in 1951 and from Eckels College of Mortuary Science, Philadelphia, PA, in 1954 where he served as Class President and President of the Student Council. He has been married 45 years to Catherine M. Thompson Barranco, “Kitty.” He and his wife came to Severna Park in 1959 and together they purchased land to open the Barranco Funeral Home. In 1960 Mr. Barranco joined the Severna Park Rotary Club and served as Club President in1968. He was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and served as Vice President of its first Parish Council. He was an honorary member of the Holy Trinity Council Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Chartwell Golf & Country Club, the Kent Island Yacht Club from 1969 until 1999, and a member of the Berrywood Yacht Club. He joined the Rotary Yacht Squadron of the Chesapeake Bay 36 years ago and served as Commodore of the Chesapeake Fleet. He was made an honorary member of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company after serving 40 years as an associate member. He was a member of the Severna Park Elks Club, and a Charter Member of the Severna Park Jaycees, a member of the Severna Park Chamber of Commerce serving as President in 1962, and a member of the Sons of Italy, Annapolis Lodge. In 1980 Mr. Barranco served as President of the Automobile Funeral Director’s Association. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors’ Association; he served on the Maryland State Board of Morticians in the 1960’s serving as President in 1985. He was also President of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association from 1987 – 1988. In 1999, Mr. Barranco was named Grand Marshal for the Severna Park 4th of July Parade. Up until the time of his death, he was operating the Barranco & Sons P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home together with his family. Before moving to McKinsey Park, Mr. Barranco & his wife lived on Cypress Creek. His hobbies included radio and marine electronics, traveling and spending time at their Ocean City home and aboard his boat “Bella Vista” with family and friends. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Robert S. Barranco, Jr., James E. Barranco, John A. Barranco and one daughter, Carolyn Barranco Russell, all of Severna Park, MD. One brother Frank T. Barranco, M.D. of Lutherville, Maryland, one sister, Mary A. DelRosso, of Plaistow, NH. Also survived by seven grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Salvatore H. Barranco, M.D. and Mabel A. Barranco. Visitation at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Saturday, September 20, 2003 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 21, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church on Ritchie Hwy and Cypress Creek Road on Monday, September 22, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Our Lady of the Fields Church Cemetery, Millersville, MD.
