Dorothy Frances Winn Stephenson, age 102, resident of Waller, Texas, passed from this world on October 5, 2018. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carole Stephenson-Snell and Wallace Snell; her son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Sheryl Stephenson; her daughter-in-law, Melba Stephenson; nephew, Tommy Winn and his wife, Bess; niece, Janis Aaron and her husband, Jim; 8 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years, Bob Stephenson, Sr.; her son, Bob Stephenson, Jr.; and her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mae Winn.
Dorothy was born to Oscar and Marcella Winn on November 22, 1915, in Houston, Texas. She married Bob Stephenson, Sr., on April 12, 1936, and they had three children, Carole, Bob, Jr., and Roy. Dorothy was a loving wife and mother and an accomplished cook, artist, and athlete. She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends, and she created beautiful ceramics and oil paintings. She was a Republican Precinct Chairman, and she wrote human interest stories for the Houston Chronicle’s “Peach” section in the 1950s. Bob, Sr. and Bob, Jr. were Houston radio personalities who hosted “The Bob Stephenson Outdoor Show” for 30 years, and Dorothy also was masterful with a rod and reel. She became a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and taught her children and grandchildren how to swim. She later went on to win 10 gold medals in swimming in the Senior Olympics. She was an adept dancer, and she was a Houston Astros and Houston Rockets superfan.
Dorothy’s long life was full and vibrant. We, her family, are blessed by and grateful for the close, loving, and nurturing family she created. Our unbreakable bonds and steadfast love for one another are her gift to us and her legacy.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Waller United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or your favorite charity in her memory.
