Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds as well as officials at the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) have recommended we follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC has recommended that for the next eight (8) weeks, in-person events in the United States should not consist of more than 50 people.
Fjelstul Funeral Home will follow this mandate and only allow 50 people maximum in the building at one time.
UPDATE – March 16, 2020
This afternoon, the White House released “The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America - 15 Days to Slow the Spread.”
Among these guidelines are that people “Avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people” for the next 15 days.
This recommendation impacts funerals/viewings in that they would be limited to ten people for the next 15 days. Fjelstul Funeral Home will follow this guideline from President Trump limiting funerals/visitations to 10 people for the next 15 days.
UPDATE – Tuesday morning, March 17, 2020
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Tuesday morning issued a proclamation prohibiting many things to the general public through March 31st. All social, community, spiritual, religious, recreational, leisure, and sporting gatherings and events of more than 10 people are hereby prohibited at all locations and venues.
UPDATE - April 1
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds extended to April 30 her proclamation of closing business and schools, the suspension of non-essential surgeries and a ban on gatherings of more than 10 people.
Our sympathies go out to anyone who has the additional burden of grief and loss during this time, and we are here to guide each family with their particular needs on an individual basis. We are here to help bereaved families to work with their funeral director to create meaningful services that fall within the governor's emergency order of limiting large public gatherings.
Assisting families and friends with loss is our privilege and honor as funeral directors. Given the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to know that funeral directors throughout Iowa are taking precautions to limit exposure to the coronavirus. We are still operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week making certain that those entrusted to our care and the families we serve are receiving uninterrupted service and attention, regardless of the cause of death.
By now, you are aware that another way to limit the spread of the virus is to refrain from going out in public if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or are feeling unwell. Please stay home to not only speed your recovery and prevent spreading illness, but to also protect those in high-risk groups. If you are experiencing a cough, fever, or shortness of breath, we encourage you to not attend funeral services. Reach out to the funeral home and we will be willing to share your sympathies with the family of the deceased and we may also offer some other options to let the bereaved know that you support and care for them during this difficult time.
We are your neighbors and friends. We are honored to serve your family at this difficult time. Funeral directors live and work in our community and we take the impact of this pandemic seriously.
