"Show me the manner in which a nation or a community cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender sympathies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals. " William E. Gladstone 1809-1898 Prime Minister of Great Britain
The words of Great Britain’s Prime Minister Gladstone ring true today. In our quest for things, we abandon our own integrity to obtain them. We choose objects over people, we choose quantity over quality, we have settled for instant gratification instead of long term commitment; we choose to lose our very soul to what society deems is worthy. In reality what we are looking for is right in front of us…our family, our friends, our community, these are the “things” that are important; these are the “things” that if you choose to focus on will bring you the most satisfaction in life. Losing oneself in the service of others; placing others before ourselves, treating others as you wish to be treated brings lifelong joy to an otherwise mundane existence.
We see it today in peoples' attitudes towards death. The “let’s just get this over with mentality” does not allow us to fully process our grief. Grief is a journey, a journey that begins with the acceptance that losing someone you love hurts and that there is no quick fix. It begins with taking the time to remember the importance of the life that has been lived and that our lives will be forever changed. It begins in allowing ourselves to come together as a community to grieve. It begins with having a place to go to remember and reflect on what this life means not only today, but in the years to come.
