February 15, 1988 - April 28, 2017
Mathew A. Tauferner, age 29, of Sturgeon Bay (formerly of Tigerton) passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017 in a kayaking accident.
We are going to need your help. There is a space we need to fill. You see, there is a story to tell, an incredible, outlandish, fun-filled, adventure packed love story to tell...and we need your help.
Our story has a quiet, sweet beginning...there was this small town guy who met this small town girl and they fell in love. The dashing Mark Tauferner and the quiet Brenda Prey fell in love. They were blessed with a little girl they named Cari and a few years later came another little girl they named Mandi. Mark and Brenda loved their girls and their growing family. A few years passed and they prayed for another baby to love, another child to raise. On a cold 15th of February 1988, their baby boy Mathew Alan Tauferner was born into our hearts at Clintonville Community Hospital that day and their little family was complete. This is the beginning.
Here is where our story changes. Think of it as one of those choose your adventure stories, where we all have different versions and the perspective changes depending on the reader. This is “The Dash”. The Dash is unique to all of us and in the end we will all have one. The Dash, that simple symbol between two points. The journey between the beginning and the end. The open space you see on headstones between two dates. This is the space where our stories take place.
Mat’s “Dash” was full of adventure. He was a boy everyone could love and who loved everyone. From his classmates at Tigerton High School to his buddies at work, Mat left an impression on everyone he met. It was that twinkle in his eye, that smile a mile wide and that genuine love that brought you in. His adventurous spirit found its home in the outdoors, where he plotted his hunt, hung his bow, welcomed the challenge and cherished his moments. No matter where he roamed, he called Split Rock his home and had a tattoo of the coordinates to remind him. He loved without limits and encouraged others to do the same. He was Uncle to Levi and Zander, brother to Cari’s husband, Don Dzioba and Mandi’s Mark Bailey Jr. and a nephew, a grandson, and a favorite cousin to his big loving family. Mat was a big brother and best buddy to every child he met. He was Peter Pan looking for Lost Boys, and when he found them he taught them to hunt and to fish, to golf and to play, to shoot a basket and to build a fort.
Mat's greatest adventure began when he met the love of his life his life, Aysia. She was his small town girl, his center, his heart and her daughter London was the apple of his eye. They made a quiet home in their little cabin outside of Sturgeon Bay.
Mat lived his last adventure on Friday, April 28th 2017. He was brave, he was foolish. He paddled out to the great wide open with his friend by his side. The heartbreaking last chapter of his story was written. It was too soon and they were too young.
We need your help to fill the space between, to fill The Dash, to share your story. Friends and family are invited to an outdoor Celebration of Life on Wednesday, May 3rd at The River House, W16787 County Road M, Tigerton, WI.
