Carolyn Louise Godwin Bass, age 76, of Jasper, FL. passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City, FL.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Jasper, FL. with Mr. Mike Johnson officiating assisted by Rev. Roger Hutto. The eulogy was given by her daughter, Jill Adams. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper, FL.

Carolyn was born October 5, 1939, in Quitman, Georgia to the late Willie Pearson Godwin and Nora Hallie Wheeler Godwin. She was the 4th of five children. Brothers are the late Willard Godwin (Faye Ann), late Olin Godwin (Pat), and Lester Godwin (Jeanne) and her best friend and sister, Norma Cook (Tom).

She was 13 years old when her family relocated to Jasper, Florida. Her mother, Hallie, was known for the best butter in town. In May of 1956, she married her sweetheart, John J. Bass, Sr. a native of Jasper, Florida. They had five children; Cindy Eatmon (Bob), Nancy Mathis (Jorrie), Jay Bass (April), Laurie Rogers, and Jill Adams (Mike).

They opened Bass's Furniture and Appliance business in 1962, which is still in operation today. For twenty years after the death of her husband, she continued to operate the family business with her daughter and son, Cindy and Jay.

Carolyn's first love was Jesus Christ; her Lord and Savior. She loved reading the Bible daily and enjoyed fellowship with her church family at Jasper Church of Christ.

Carolyn loved being "Granny Gran" to her 12 grandchildren; Megan (JB), Nicole (Clay), Austin (Michael), Ana (Jesse), Anson (Kali), Haley, Tristan, Seth, Hallie, Luke, Sarabeth, and Lance. The apple of her eye was her 3 great grandsons; Clyde, Brady, and Wyatt. Aunt Carolyn was loved by many nieces and nephews.

When she wasn't with her family or working at Bass's, she would be out with her fishing buddies (Becky Jo, Juanette, and Norma) at Horseshoe Beach trying to out fish her sister. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, traveling, reading, and gardening. On Thursday evenings, she could often be found listening to Teddy MacElvis at the Spirit of the Suwannee.

From serving as a former Chamber President and Board member to receiving Hamilton County's Individual of the year, Carolyn served her community in many capacities. She was instrumental in the startup of the Blackberry Festival as co-chair of the Downtown Revitalization Committee. Carolyn was also the most beautiful Mrs. Clause and regular trophy winner for the annual chili cook-off.

She was surrounded by her family on May 7, 2016, as she transitioned into Glory after an extended illness. She greeted everyone with a smile and will be missed by many.

Memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center at 6037 West U.S. Hwy 90, Lake City, FL. 32055.
