U.S. VeteranM. Florence “Muffy” Leathen, nee Nusbaum, of West Bend died on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at her residence at Cedar Bay West at the age of 92 years. She was born on September 16, 1915 in Goshen, IN to the late Daniel and Mabel (nee Gorsuch) Nusbaum.

As a young child, her family moved to Park Falls. After graduating from Park Falls High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition. She then became employed as a pediatric dietitian, working at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

In 1942, she enlisted in the United States Army, working at a field hospital in England. While she was in the service, she met her future husband, William Leathen. It was following her discharge that she and Bill were married in Park Falls on September 11, 1945. In 1947, the family moved to Pittsburgh.

It was in Pittsburgh where she raised her 3 children and was active in the community. She was a charter member of the Wexford Community United Presbyterian Church. In addition to being an avid bridge player, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and reading.

Bill predeceased on April 20, 1992.

In 1995, she moved to Wisconsin, settling in West Bend, to be closer to her family.

Survivors include 3 children Mary (Lawrence) Giventer of Turlock, CA, William J. (Susan) of Onalaska and Sue Ellen Leathen of Burbank, CA; 5 grandchildren Michael Leathen, Matthew Leathen, Sarah (Douglas) Kaber, Cindy Giventer and Dominion Giventer; 4 great-grandchildren Emma Kaber, Saerdra and Mickel Giventer and Jasmine Nickelberry; 2 sisters Jean Meloy of Waunakee and Kate (Gene) Bradfield of Appleton; 1 brother-in-law Leo Miller of Newburg; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by 5 brothers and sisters Lucile Hardzinski, David Nusbaum, Joseph Nusbaum, Sarah Miller and Sue Nusbaum.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 2 at 6 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA. Visitation will be on Tuesday at the funeral home from 3 until 5:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to Welcome Home in Newburg, a non-profit home which showcases wheelchair friendly modfications and design, Cedar Community Hospice or Cedar Community Foundation.
