Ellen F. Buck, age 91, long time contributor to Madison social support networks, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Fair View Nursing Home in Mauston after a brief illness. She was born August 25, 1919 in Chicago, Ill. to Paul Fedder and Gertrude (Krause) Fedder of Hammond, Ind. Ellen graduated from Rockford College and received her Master’s degree in Mathematics from Radcliffe University. She married R. Creighton Buck on December 28, 1944, long time professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin. Ellen and Creighton started a lifetime of personal and professional union at the Harvard Mathematics Club where Ellen was the first President of the Club and Creighton was Secretary. She co-authored 2 mathematics textbooks with Creighton and authored Calculus guides for the US Armed Forces Institute. She was a Mathematics Instructor at Wellesley College and Brown University. Subsequently Ellen and Creighton moved to Madison where Creighton accepted a professorship and Ellen taught at the University of Wisconsin Extension. Ellen was dedicated to Madison’s support networks, serving on boards and as officer for the YWCA, Attic Angel Association, Residential Facilities Development Foundation, Bethel Outreach Inc., Bethel Parish Board of Education and Bethel Social Concerns Committee. Education was important to Ellen, attending her grandchildren’s graduations across the country and assisting in their college and graduate pursuits. She loved the cabin on Lake Redstone with the memories of family gatherings over the years. She stayed in contact with friends around the world and enjoyed traveling, ranging from Alaska to the rivers of Europe, China, and the Panama Canal. She was also very active in the Republican Women of Dane County in a variety of organizing roles, including President, and enjoyed her involvement with the University League, Madison Civics Club, Shorewood Hills Community League and Bethel Lutheran Church Women. Ellen is survived by her children, Nancy E. B. (D. Keith) Ness of Mauston and Donald P. (Lynne) Buck of Littleton, Colo; six grandchildren, Eric Ness, Kristin (Patrick) Schwickerath, Kimberly Ness and Tiffany (Andrew) Casper; Kelly Buck and Sandy Buck; and great-grandchild Parker Schwickerath. She was preceded in death by her husband Creighton and her brother Paul Fedder. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at BETHEL LUTHERAL CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Avenue in Madison, with visitation at 2:30 pm and service at 3:30 pm. Burial will be private.
