Charles' Obituary

U.S. Veteran
Charles Joseph Monzillo (Charlie) of Clermont went home to be with his Lord after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  Born on October 4, 1926 to Biagio and Hertha Monzillo, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY.

He is survived by the love of his life, Ruth (Whitmore) Monzillo, his children Nancy Humbyrd, Susan (Henry) Smith and Keith (Christine) Monzillo.  Charlie’s grandchildren are Laurie (Jim) Simmer, Jason (Wendy) Fairservice, Tammy (Brian Gadoury) Smith, Kevin (Kristen) Smith, and Krista (Luke) Turano.  His sister, Rose (Leonard) Haynes shared many happy memories through the years and their sorrow at the loss of a brother, Edward.

Charles led a life full of service to others.  He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII (He was honored to be selected for the Honor Flight in 2015), Transit Police of NYC and following that, 25 years of service to the NYFD.  After retiring from NY, he moved to Willimantic CT where he became Chief of their Fire Department.  Being willing to face new challenges, Charlie moved to Danbury, CT to serve as Chief of Department for five years.

He was his children’s best cheerleader alongside his wife, Ruth, of 68 years. Family celebrations were many and his joy and pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren were known to all who met him.  Charlie was a longtime member of the Lions Club and it was recently noted that many “happy dollars” were shared during the Club meetings.  He was a member of several Lutheran Churches where he served in various Council positions and committees. Charlie loved to sing and belonged to church choirs and singing groups throughout his life. Friendship was a valuable gift that he never took for granted

His love of God, Country and Family molded many who knew him.

Five Grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren have all felt the love and support of their Grandpa Charlie.  They have been truly blessed to be part of his life.

After a long career of serving others through his chosen jobs and volunteer positions, Charlie and Ruth took off to see the world. They travelled full time for 7 years in an RV seeing our great country and Canada. They continued RVing for thirty years only recently giving up this pastime. He and Ruth also traveled the world on cruise ships. Their enjoyment of traveling made for great adventures on and off the seas.

Charlie enjoyed a good game of golf, conversation and funny movies.  A meal of spaghetti and meatballs followed by a slice of strawberry cheesecake will be remembered as his favorite meal. Dad would be the first to declare that he led a wonderful and full life. His positive attitude and dedication to others were inspirational to those fortunate to have met him. His dedication to service to others was a great example to younger generations.

Charlie’s family would like to thank the staff at Benton House for their loving and considerate care the past few months, also, Compassionate Care Hospice organization who shared valuable advice and comfort during our time of sorrow.

We wish to thank all who asked after Dad and hugs to all who took the time to visit and add cheer to Dad’s final days

While flowers cheer us for a few days, in lieu of flowers a memorial contribution to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Hurricane Fund  13600 Caspian Lane, Clermont, Florida 34711 will further his commitment to his faith family.
