H. Avalee McAllister, 80, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Barton W. Stone Home.
She was born April 23, 1929, in Arenzville, the daughter of Raymond and Mabel Smith Schnitker. She married Glen L. “Buck” McAllister on March 20, 1950, in Bethany, and he survives.
She is also survived by two daughters, Susan (Loren) Cantrell of Jacksonville and Lee Ann (Steve) Little of Winchester; two sons, Kurt (Susan) McAllister of Park Forest and Kyle McAllister of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Stephanie Cantrell of Jacksonville, Chad Cantrell of Chicago, Eric (Abbe) Little of Winchester, Shaun (Lauren) Little of Chicago and Brett (Alicia) Little of Jacksonville; two great-granddaughters, Logyn and Lilyan Little of Winchester; and one brother, Ray Leon (Joy) Schnitker of Arenzville.
Mrs. McAllister was a 1947 graduate of Arenzville High School. She then attended Our Saviour Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked as a secretary at Meredosia Grade School for several years, and was a member of Brooklyn United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Avalee enjoyed reading, fishing and traveling, and especially being “on the go”. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Meredosia. The family will meet friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Brooklyn United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Support Group.
