Obituary announcement                   Dateline: Cascade

Joseph H. Gehl, 72, of Cascade, Iowa, died Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville, Iowa after a courageous battle with cancer.

Friends and relatives of Joe may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a KC Rosary will be held at 5 P.M., and a Wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Services for Joe will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 1, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fillmore, Iowa, with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating.  Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fillmore, Iowa.

Joe was born August 5, 1942 in Monticello, Iowa, son of Henry J. and Monica (Melloy) Gehl. He received his education in the Sacred Heart Schools and is a graduate of the former St. Mary’s High School in Cascade.  On June 17, 1967 he was united in marriage to Marjorie McNally at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa.

Joe is an Army Veteran having served in the reserves from 1964-1970.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Fillmore, Iowa, a member of  its Befriender Group, the Cascade American Legion Post #528, the Cascade Knight Columbus Council #930, a leader for the 4-H Whitewater Jr. farmers.

Joe was a most chaste husband who's love, honor, and devotion kept him by his best friend's side for 47 years.  A father who instilled strength in his children through a tireless work ethic, tough-love teaching, and leading by example. A friend who cut wide circles, treated everyone with dignity and respect, and always had time for conversation.

A servant worker who devoted his body and mind with meticulous commitment to the family farm, multiple committee services and even his "retirement" car hauling ventures.  Although Joe was taken from this earth sooner than expected, he went to his final resting place knowing he had lived a fulfilled life with no regrets.

He is survived by his wife, Morjorie (McNally) Gehl of  Cascade; five children, Jeff Gehl of Cascade, Greg Gehl of Belleville, MI, Scott Gehl of Cascade, Nicholas (Angela) Gehl of Des Moines, and Kelly (Jason) Simon of Cascade; grandchildren, Alaina and Jack Gehl; Alex and Ben Gehl; Henry and Lucy Gehl; Devin, Kennedy and Lane Simon; three brothers, Bill (Kathy) Gehl, Mike Gehl, and Roger Gehl all of Cascade; four sisters, Bonnie (Dan) Schmitt of Fairfield Glade, TN, Judy (Dave) Kleitsch, Diane (Dave) Coyle and Joyce (Brian) McQuillen all of Cascade.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers in infancy, Gary, Raymond, and Henry; two nephews, Rex Gehl and Justin DeMoss; and a niece, Kimberly Kleitsch.

The family would like to thank the Finley Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville and Hospice of Dubuque for all the care and support given to Joe and the family.
