John Winfield Shepherd, 71, eternally loved by his family, passed away at home, Tuesday, Aug 5, 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer. John was born on Oct 9, 1942 in Youngstown, Oh, to Dorothy (Crawford) and Ralph Shepherd. When John was 4 yrs old, his father died and his mother moved to Sunnyside, Wa, where she married Robert T. Benjamin, giving John 3 siblings to grow up with. He graduated from Sunnyside High School and married Beverly Martin on April 29, 1960.
John and Beverly moved to Woodburn in 1968 and there raised their five children. Steve (Nanette), David (Cheryl), Mike (Michelle), Brenda, and Doug (Clarissa), and 18 wonderful grandchildren.
John was an electrical supervisor and worked in the trade for over 40 years. He taught electrical apprentices at Chemeketa Community College for 17 yrs and was the JATC board chairman for many years.
The highlight of his life was serving a 23 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Nauvoo, Il, where he was called to serve as an electrician and was able to serve his church at this great historical site at the same time.
John is survived by his wife, Beverly, all of their children and their spouses, and 17 of their grandchildren, losing their oldest grandchild at 23 months. He is also survived by his brother Larry Benjamin of Yakima, Wa, and sisters Roberta Miller and Marjorie VanCleave of Eugene, Or.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug 9, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Woodburn. Interment was at Belle Passi Cemetery. Arrangements by Simon-Cornwell Chapel, Woodburn.
