Died: July 30, 2014

U.S. VeteranGlenn Eugene Hale, of Petersburg and formerly of Springfield, and Pleasant Plains, passed away on July 30, 2014 at the age of 88. He was born on August 29, 1925 in Springfield, IL, the youngest of three sons, to Wilbur O. and Dorothy (Hahn) Hale.

Glenn attended West Grand School as a youngster and then graduated from Springfield High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Navy as a machine gunner aboard the PBY in World War II. After the war, he graduated from Springfield Junior College and then attended the University of Illinois at Champaign. He retired as an Engineer from the Illinois Bell Telephone Company. He was a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America in recognition of his retirement from active service in the telephone industry and dedication to the principles of fellowship, loyalty and service.

He married the love of his life Mary Claudine Walker on June 4, 1949 and they built two homes during their marriage and raised two children. On May 18, 1974 he married his second wife Norma Jean (Cousin) King/Hudd and helped to raise her five children. His third wife died and he has since enjoyed the long awaited reunited friendship and devotion of his first wife Mary. He was active in the Springfield Right-to-Life Walk and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Glenn loved the country side and the outdoors. Earlier in life his hobbies included roller and ice skating, fishing, hunting, swimming, water and snow skiing, boating, camping. His passion for God's green earth was infectious as he taught children throughout his life of his hobbies. Glenn loved to snow ski in Colorado when he was in his 60's. Having met his first bride at Moonlight Gardens Roller Rink in Springfield, his zest for the rink never died. Glenn roller skated at his great granddaughter Kelsey's 10th birthday party when he was 77 years old, and amazed many with his speed and ease of movement around the rink. He went fishing at a Hale family outing when he was in his 80's at Lake Sangchris. Over the last several years, he enjoyed regular road trips with his daughter Jeanie and son-in-law Stan to Vandalia to visit his older brother Wayne and family where old family stories were told in an environment surrounded by laughter and love and he could fix anything. Most of all, he loved the Lord and did his best to lead a Christian life.
