ROBERT D. BARNES, age 63, of 25 Westchester Drive, East Lyme passed away unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London surrounded by his family.
He was born in New London on September 7, 1950 the son of the late Charles and Jane Higgins Barnes. Rob was married to his ‘Dahling’ Sandy Bega on August 9, 1975 in Groton.
Rob graduated from Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School in the class of 1969. He graduated from Mitchell College with an Associate’s Degree and furthered his education at the University of Hartford, graduating in 1977.
Rob worked in the Circulation Department of the New London Day from 1973 to 1986. In 1986, he became a Branch Manager at various locations for the Hartford Courant and worked there until 1999. In 2000, he moved to the Credit Department at Mohegan Sun Casino, retiring in 2010.
In addition to his wife Sandy, Rob is survived by his son, Matt ‘Scoot’ Barnes of New London, his daughter, Kelly ‘Hurricane’ Barnes of Waterford, his brother David Barnes and his wife Beth of Stonington, his brother Keith Barnes of Woodstock, his sister Nancy Isif and her husband Bob of Groton. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Diana (Dee) Kahl of Groton, his parents-in-law Frank and Lee Bega of Montville and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Rob enjoyed his retirement to the fullest, engaging in activities such as golf, yard work and traveling with his wife and friends. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and loved watching tennis and golf greats battle to number one. Rob especially treasured the many memories that were made with friends and family in the backyard of their East Lyme home.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, July 29 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. A celebration of Rob’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 30 at 4:00 at the Groton Elks Club, 700 Shennecossett Road. Donations in his memory may be made to the CT Audubon Society at
