H. Maxine Whitacre, 82, of Jacksonville, IL died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born February 5, 1932 in rural Jacksonville, the daughter of Fred William and Anna Bell Hopper Massey. She married John E. Whitacre on March 11, 1951 at Central Christian Church in Jacksonville and he survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Ron E. Whitacre of Jacksonville and John S. Whitacre (wife, Heather) of Ottawa; two daughters, N. Jean Irlam (husband, David) of Springfield and Linda K. Whitacre of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Bethany Whitacre and Ronnie Whitacre, both of Jacksonville, Dakota Whitacre and Jack Whitacre, both of Ottawa, Jennifer Rees (husband, Jonathan) of Chatham, and Michael Irlam (wife, Nikki) of Springfield; a step grandson, Andrew Krug of Ottawa;
three great grandchildren, Gwen Rees, Evan Rees, and Latham Irlam; two step great grandchildren, Hannah and Abby Norris; two brothers, Gerald Massey (wife, Leona) and Glen Massey (wife, Vicky), all of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Cleda Gutmann and Norma Jean Massey.
Mrs. Whitacre was a 1951 graduate of Jacksonville High School. She was formerly employed at Capitol Records, Visiting Nurses Association where she worked as a home health aide for 9 years, and Sherwood Eddy YMCA where she worked with the Mighty Mites program. She was a long-time member of Central Christian Church in Jacksonville.
An accomplished seamstress, Maxine was a highly organized homemaker and a dedicated mother to her children and all their friends. In her free time, she loved gardening, canning vegetables, and spoiling grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Monday. Memorial gifts are suggested to Central Christian Church or Bob Freesen YMCA.
