Margaret M. (Gebhardt) Baird, 90, of 224 Chace St., died Saturday, June 28, 2014, in Sterling Village, Sterling, after an illness. Her husband of 62 years, Alfred T. Baird, died in 2012.
She leaves six children: Karen A. Gage and her husband, Alan, of Clinton, Rosemary Mack and her husband, Dan, of Laconia, NH, Allen T. Baird and his wife, Eileen, of Wilbraham, Brian A. Baird and his wife, Sally, of Sterling, Christopher J. Baird and his wife, Peggy, of Clinton, and Daniel P. Baird and his wife, Patricia, of Princeton; thirteen grandchildren: Sean, Ryan, Timothy, Julie, Brendan, Kevin, Matthew, Stacy, Alexandra, Nicholas, David, Peter & Philip; one great-granddaughter, Rozalyn; several nieces and nephews. Five brothers, John, Francis, Raymond, Joseph and Carroll Gebhardt, and her close cousin, Phyllis Baird, predeceased her.
Margaret was born in Clinton and raised in Watertown, the daughter of John M. and Rose E. (Manning) Gebhardt. A graduate of Watertown High School and the former Symmes Hospital School of Nursing, Arlington, she was a US Army Veteran, serving as a First Lieutenant with the Nursing Corps, stationed in the Philippines during WWII. In addition, she attended graduate school at Boston College.
For 27 years, Margaret worked as a Registered Nurse at Clinton Hospital, retiring in 1985.
A member of the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church, and St. John the Guardian of Our Lady Parish, she enjoyed knitting, gardening, and baking, especially for her grandchildren, who regularly enjoyed having cookies at “Nana’s”.
Margaret’s funeral will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014, from the McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will follow in Reservoir Pines Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Clinton Hospital Foundation, 201 Highland St., Clinton, MA 01510.
