Died: June 10, 2014
Duane Frederick Freagon, age 86, of Chippewa Falls, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Duane was born on October 10, 1927 in Madison, WI to Bernard and Henrietta (Waldusky) Freagon. He grew up in Cadott with his five brothers and sister. He loved to tell his grandchildren stories about his numerous jobs as a teenager and playing eight-man football. He always told them to never turn down an opportunity to learn something new, because “you might be doing that for a living someday.”
Duane left high school one year early and enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in September of 1945. He served his country for one year at Great Lakes in Illinois and one year in Wahiawa, Hawaii. In June of 1951, Duane was called back to service aboard the Navy hospital ship USS Repose in Korea and was discharged in September of 1952. He loved his country and he was a member of the Chippewa Falls VFW Post 1038 for 27 years and also a Past Commander for 2 terms serving from 1993 to 1995. Duane also served as Post Adjutant for several terms and held various other offices and program chairmanships at the Post level. He was a very active and dependable member of the VFW and rarely missed a meeting.
He met the love of his life, Audrey Anderson, polka dancing at Rainbow Gardens. They married on December 28, 1949 at St. Rose of Lima in Cadott. Duane and Audrey were blessed with four children; Dan, John, Jean and Barb.
Duane worked as a storekeeper at the Northern Center for the developmentally disabled in Chippewa Falls for 34 years. He was an avid fast-pitch softball player and enjoyed deer hunting in Jump River. After retiring in 1988, Duane spent his time fishing and playing cards with friends and family, tinkering in his workshop, helping his neighbors, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Duane is survived by his wife of 64 years, Audrey; three children, Dan (Connie), John and Barb (Dan) Szymanski; six grandchildren, Jason (Carrie) Szymanski, Dr. Jared Szymanski, Tony Freagon, Danielle (Adam) Jacobson, Jessica (Ben) Johnson and Bobbi Jo Freagon; and three great-grandchildren, Adrian, Aaron Szymanski and Azalea Jacobson. Survivors also include brothers; Donald and Clarence; sister-in-law, Viv Ostenson and many other close friends and relatives.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers; Bernard, Lyle, Robert; sister, Mildred Karashinski; and daughter, Jean Freagon.
