Lloyd Victor Powell, 103, of Bicknell, passed away Saturday, Jun 7, 2014 at Colonial Assisted Living in Vincennes. Lloyd was born May 28, 1911 in Linton, IN, the son of Oscar and Lilly (Anderson) Powell. He was a 1930 graduate of Bicknell High School where he participated in football, tennis, and track. Lloyd married Virginia (Harris) Powell on September 30, 1940. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2010.
Lloyd was employed at the Bicknell Post Office in 1936 and retired as assistant Postmaster in 1976. Lloyd was a member of the Bicknell United Methodist Church, where he served as a church trustee. He was a member of the Edwardsport Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1157, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served in the United States Navy as a 2nd class postal clerk on the cruiser U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. He was involved in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Lloyd is survived by his brother, Rex Powell and his wife Ruth of Evansville; brother-in-law Henry Hogan of Hillsdale, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; brothers, John and William, as well as two infant brothers.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Bicknell United Methodist Church and an hour before the funeral service. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the Bicknell United Methodist Church with Pastor Nan Dehnke and Rev. Steve Rundel officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Bicknell Memorial Cemetery with the All Weather Firing Squad performing full military honors.
