Robert J. Hunyard, 94, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center, DeKalb.


Born July 17, 1919, in Chicago, the son of John and Martha Hunyard, Bob married Ruby V. Johnson on December 8, 1945, at the Congregational Church in Downers Grove.


Bob was a veteran of the US Army, having served during World War II. Bob was a graduate of Lake Forest College. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Indiana. Bob was a professor and the Director of Audio Visual Communication Services at Northern Illinois University until his retirement. He was a city of DeKalb alderman, a member of First United Methodist Church of DeKalb, Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to tie his own flies. He also enjoyed wood working.


He is survived by his sons, Mark (Laura) Hunyard and Jeffrey Hunyard both of DeKalb; one granddaughter, Rachel (Doug) Farley of DeKalb; three great-grandchildren, Niya, Parker and Griffin; sister, Helen James of Downers Grove; and two nieces.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, in 2010.


The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion, AmVets and VFW Honor Guard following the service. Burial will be Thursday, June 5, at Clarendon Hills Cemetery, Darien.


Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the time of services Wednesday at Anderson Funeral Home.
