Daniel Alexande Gillan, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains passed away on May 10, 2014 at age 92. He was the youngest of seven children of Violet and William Gillan.
Blessed with a large and loving family, he was the husband of Doris [nee Mial], father of Bruce and wife Barbara Gillan, Stephen and wife Barbara Gillan, and Barbara and husband Joseph Abbamont. Grandfather of Bryan and wife Becky Gillan, Brett and wife Carolyn Gillan, Kristen and husband Matthew Purdy, Carrie and husband Stephen Zinn, Mark Gillan and wife Hillary, and Daniel Abbamont. Great-grandfather of Reese, Megan, Nathan, Anna, Jacob, Conner, Emily and Alexander Gillan, Owen, Baxter and Lucy Purdy, and Evan and Ryan Zinn.
Born in Ocean Grove, he had lived in Paterson, Midland Park, Wyckoff, Mahwah and Pompton Plains. Mr. Gillan served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps. during World War II. He was educated in Ocean Grove schools and at Paterson State Teachers College. With Mrs. Gillan he owned and operated Sherman Printing Company in Passaic. He served on The Board of St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic for thirty years, as an officer of the Passaic Rotary Club, and many years on the Midland Park Ambulance Corps.
A follower of Jesus Christ, Mr. Gillan delighted in serving in church choirs and in leading Bible discussion groups. He also served in leadership positions on many boards and committees in the various churches he attended.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life is scheduled for 1PM Wednesday, May 14 at the Cedar Crest Chapel.
