PEORIA - Dr. Frederick J. Heinzen, 83, of Peoria passed away at 12:21 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born on June 24, 1930, in Rockford, Ill., to Johanna (Zervas) and Friedrich Heinzen. He married Kathleen Rose Sheehan at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Peoria, on June 18, 1955. She survives.
Also surviving are eight children, Frederick, Jr. (Janet) of Fairfax, Va., Bridget (Tim) Margeson of Cumming, Ga., Naomi (Tom) Lasky of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Heidi (Dan) Sullivan of Naperville, Ill., Katie (Rick) Fulcher of Peoria, Kevin Heinzen of Miskolc, Hungary, Erik Heinzen of Denver, Colo., Carrie (Scott) Kubicek of Elkhorn, Nebr.; 18 grandchildren, Katie, Frederick III, and Hallie Heinzen, Luke, Emily, Mark, Erik, and Kellen Lasky, Nick, J.P., Keri, and Danny Sullivan, Erin, Maura, and Drew Fulcher, and Ben, Maureen, and Kevin Kubicek; and a cousin Dorothee (Dietmar) Jansen of Hurth, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Davis.
Dr. Heinzen graduated from St. Thomas Grade School in 1944, Spalding Institute in 1948, and Marquette University School of Medicine in 1955, where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. Following Medical School graduation he interned at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1958 at The Strategic Air Command at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota as a flight surgeon.
Following his military discharge, Doctor Heinzen began practicing medicine as a family physician in Peoria and worked full time until his retirement in 1998. In addition to his private practice, he was a clinical professor for The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. Post retirement, he volunteered at Heartland Community Health Clinic for 5 years.
Doctor was a member of The Peoria County Medical Society since 1958, serving as the president in 1985. He also held membership in The Illinois State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. During his years of medical service, he was an active staff member at OSF Saint Francis Hospital, serving as Medical Staff President in 1972-1973. In addition, he was on the courtesy staff at Methodist and Proctor Hospitals. He was a board-certified member of The American Academy of Family Practice since 1970 until the present time.
The Heinzen’s were one of the original families at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Fritz was active in the parish and Catholic education in the Peoria area. He was president of the St. Vincent de Paul School Board and a member of the parish men’s club. He served as board president of Father Sweeney’s Gifted School. He and his wife were co-presidents of the Spalding/Academy Parent’s Board. He was the president of the Peoria Catholic High School Board in 1975, which at that time included Spalding, Academy of our Lady, and Bergan High Schools. Dr. Heinzen and his wife, Kathleen, were recipients of the Pere Marquette Award, from the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in 2000.
Doctor Fritz was most of all a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed family gatherings with Kathleen, their eight children and 18 grandchildren. He will be remembered for his consistent friendly and caring demeanor towards his patients, family, and friends. He also enjoyed traveling, golf, and gardening. He was a member of Mt. Hawley Country Club, where he was a caddy as a youth. He had two hole-in-ones there, one at age 70 and one at age 77.
A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6001 N. University, in Peoria, with Fr. James Pallardy officiating. (Due to Race for the Cure events, when traveling St. Vincent de Paul for the Mass, it is advised to avoid University and instead to take Allen Road to Northmoor.)
Visitation will be from 5 – 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, also at the church, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Memorial contributions in Fritz’s memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul School Endowment Fund, Peoria Notre Dame High School, OSF St. Francis Medical Center ICU, or the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception.
