Velma Irene Roberts Henry, age 94, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the Lincoln Community Care Center. She was born February 11, 1920 in Edwards, MO, the daughter of James Roy and Bertha Buckley Roberts, one of nine children. The Roberts siblings always looked out for each other, a family trait that continued all their lives.
In 1939 Irene came to Lincoln, MO, working at the original Highway Café as a waitress where she met Lawrence L. (Si) Henry whom she would later marry. World War II separated them for a time but prior to Si leaving for overseas duty in the Army, Irene would ride the train to Florida where they married October 21, 1943. While Si was overseas Irene lived with her mother-in-law Hettie Henry who was a widow. In 1946 Irene’s brother-in-law Vernie Attwood approached her with the idea that Si and Vernie purchase the Brill & Wisdom General Store. Irene asked Si and he told her to buy the store. When Si returned from the War they opened the store as Attwood & Henry and remained in business until 1977.
Si & Irene had two children, Lana and Larry. As a young Christian mother, Irene, committed to her heart to Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” The family members were all active at First Baptist Church in Lincoln.
Irene worked at Lamy’s in Sedalia until the Lincoln School District added a school lunch program. She was one of the original cooks at school. Former students still talk about the homemade cinnamon rolls, light rolls, doughnuts and made from scratch pizza she prepared. Irene taught herself to decorate cakes. She made wedding cakes, anniversary cakes and birthday cakes for numerous families in the area. She was a quilter. Irene loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren. She loved her volunteer work with the Lincoln Community Care Center Guild for over 20 years and Warm House. Her favorite Christmas tradition was filling between 40 and 50 tins of her peanut brittle to share with family and friends. She always loved a good story and a laugh.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and all her siblings; Myrtie Rapp, Gertie Davis Rapp, Ray Roberts, Fay Tucker, Jennie Hunt, Goldie Kelb, Virginia Burton and an infant sister Wanda Lee Roberts. She is survived by one brother-in-law Robert Hunt, Lincoln, MO, one sister-in-law Reba Henry of Windsor, MO, her daughter Lana Whitworth and husband Jim, Lincoln, MO and a son Larry Henry and wife Cynde, of Gardner, KS.
