Robert J. ‘Bob’ LaFrance, 80, of Groton passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Fairview in Groton.
Bob was born on May 12, 1933 in San Francisco, CA the son of Joseph A. and Mary Alice Luhman LaFrance.
He was married in 1955 to the late Barbara Munch LaFrance who passed away in 1969.
A graduate of the Merchant Marne Academy in Kings Point, NY, Bob was a Navy veteran of the Korean War; having served from 1955 to 1959. He then went on to a long career in Nuclear Testing at the Electric Boat Company and ProtoPower.
Bob was an avid sailor who, over the years had been a member of the Ram Island Yacht Club, Off Sounding and the Corinthian Sailing Assoc, Mystic- Fleet Captain. He was also member of the Mystic Seaport Museum; as well as a member of the Pilot’s Assoc of the Seaport and a long-time volunteer. He was also a member of the Rock of Ages merry band of musicians in Mystic
His survivors include two daughters Donna Marie Grant of NC, Susan L. LaFrance of Groton, three sons Robert of Groton, John of Florence, SC, Joseph of Montville, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and his long time companion Marcia Spakoski
Bob had also been predeceased by a grandson Austin.
A Celebration of his Life will be held from 5 to 8 pm Mon. June 16 at the Ram Island Yacht, 60 Front St, Noank, CT 06340.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to the Mystic Seaport Museum, 75 Greenmanville Ave, Mystic, CT 06355.
