Floyd Willard ‘Dutch’ Palmer, 89, formerly of Gales Ferry, CT, passed away on Wednesday April 23, 2014 at St. Camillus Health Center, Whitinsville, MA, after a long illness. He was the son of Willard Owen and Nettie Marie Trent Palmer. Born in Smithfield PA on January 22, 1925, he was a graduate of Connellsville High School Class of 1942.
After high school, Dutch enlisted in the Navy during World War II, where he served his country in the Submarine Service for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1963. During the war, he was involved in numerous war patrols in the Pacific theatre. Later, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he participated in maneuvers near the Arctic Circle. His career took him to various duty stations including Norfolk, VA; Salem, MA; and Groton, CT. After his naval service he worked at General Dynamics for 27 years in the Technical Publications group retiring in 1990. He was an active member of Groton Heights Baptist Church for many years serving on the Board of Trustees.
He married Wilma Faye Jones in San Diego, CA on May 14, 1948 and they lived happily together for 52 years until her passing in 2000.
He is survived by his son F. Mitchell Palmer of Northbridge, MA, and his granddaughter, Meg Palmer, of Quincy MA.
Calling hours will be on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St, Groton, CT. A short memorial service will be held immediately following calling hours. Burial will be private at a later date.
