Minnie Villalpando, age 85, of Imlay City Michigan passed away after an extended illness Friday, April 18, 2014 at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital. Minnie Herrera was born June 25, 1928 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was a daughter of Francisco and Isabel Herrera. She grew up in Brown City. She graduated from Brown City High School with the Class of 1949. She was married to Castello Villalpando on May 27, 1950 in Brown City, MI. They moved to Imlay City that very day. She has lived all of the rest of her life in the Imlay City area. Castello died on September 23, 2012. Minnie completed her Nurses Training, receiving her L. P. N. Certification from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Pontiac.  She had been employed as a Nurse by St. Joseph Hospital - Pontiac, Almont Community Hospital, Lapeer County General Hospital, and at Suncrest (Lapeer County Medical Care Facility). She was also a home maker.  For a number of years, Castello and Minnie owned the El Nopalito grocery & convenience store in Imlay City. They were instrumental in the development of the Hispanic Services Center in Imlay City. She worked on the Township and County Board of Voters Registration. Minnie was a Notary Public for Lapeer County. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Imlay City.  In her free time Minnie enjoyed crocheting, reading and sending card to her friends.  Surviving are: her daughters: Rebecca "Becky" (& Rafael Jr.) Reyes of Ogden, Utah and Pamela (& Robert) Slingerland of Imlay City; her sons: Costello "Babo" (& Lori-Lee) Villalpando of Imlay City, Frank Villalpando of Imlay City, and Steve Villalpando of Imlay City; brothers: John (& Erma) Herrera of Imlay City and Jose (& Rose) Carranza of Pontiac;   sisters: Marie Chacon of Ft. Lauderdale FLA and Frances Villalobos of Detroit; and a special sister-in-law: Esther Mata of Capac; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.   She is preceded in death by: her husband: Castello; her parents; two sisters: Maria dela Luz {Mary Lou} Quezada and Dora Martin; and by a great - granddaughter:  Monika Ruiz.   A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City. Pastor Ronald Kersten and Pastor Angel Ojeda will officiate. Burial will follow at Imlay Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 Main Street, Imlay City where the family will be available for visiting 2-5 & 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014. A special scripture service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday.
