The proud patriarch of the talented, gymnastics family of nine that hailed from the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia.
Jerry proudly served in the US Navy, as Yeoman during the Korean War, at the United States Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Maryland. Following his Naval service, Jerry went to work with his parents, the late Joseph E. Cantwell and Alice R. Smith, his late brother, Joseph Jr. and brother James (Jim) at the family furniture and appliance business, Cantwell’s Fine Furniture in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, where he worked for over fifty years. He attended La Salle College at night, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Jerry was a supportive father, loyal friend and lover of animals. He supported his children in all athletic, musical and social endeavors. In their early years, Jerry and his family were winners of the Ocean City, NJ Baby Parade and named ‘Best Dressed Family in Philadelphia’ on several occasions, earning a spot in the Philadelphia Hall of Fame. The Cantwell family was well known locally for their gymnastics appearances on the Mike Douglas Show and appearances as a family singing group on the Al Alberts Show Case.
Born into a family of 7, Jerry was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph Jr. and Francis, and sister Lorraine. He is survived by his brother and best friend, Jim, and sisters Rosalie Evans, and Nancy McCormick (Marty).
He is also survived by his children, Janet Cantwell Papale (Vince), Diane Cantwell, Susan Cantwell, Geralyn Reed (David), Patricia Morales (Jaime), Barbara Cantwell-Wheeler (Pete), Gerard Jr., Kenneth, Tina Ferguson (Paul) and grandchildren Kenneth Bauer Jr., David Copeland, Joseph Bauer, Katelyn Eastwood, Craig Bauer, Diana Copeland, Kyle Griffin, Ryan Reed, Douglass Bauer, Lyndsey Wheeler, Gabriella Papale, Alexis Badyna, Kenneth Cantwell Jr., Rebecca Wheeler, Vinny Papale , Jaylyn Morales, Nicholas Cantwell, Christopher Cantwell, Alexander Ferguson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Thursday, April 3 (6-9 P.M.) and Friday, April 4 (9:30-10:15) at Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Ave, Funeral Mass 11 A.M. at St. Katherine of Siena Church. Interment Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
