Alexandra C. Kirkpatrick

Alexandra C. (Thompson) Kirkpatrick, age 67, beloved wife of Dr. Peter A. Kirkpatrick, died early Saturday morning, March 15, 2014 at her Salem residence following a long illness. She lived in Boxford for twenty years before moving to Salem in1996. Sandy was an avid and accomplished weaver, an adventurous traveler to all parts of the world, and skied throughout the United states, Canada, France, Italy, Alaska and South America, both in resorts and in the backcountry. She read widely, especially enjoying detective fiction. She is remembered by her friends, coworkers, fellow weavers and family as a wonderful mentor with an open heart.


Born in New York City, Mrs. Kirkpatrick was the daughter of Ivor Thompson of Woodstock, CT and the late Sarah C. (Healy) Thompson. She was raised in Woodstock and Westport Connecticut, and graduated from Staples High School in Westport, going on to receive a diploma RN from Grace-New Haven School of Nursing, a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Buffalo and her Master’s Degree in Social work from Boston College in 1980, later achieving the LICSW credential and Counselor certification in the Lynn Public Schools. She took great pride in her Apprentice Weaver qualification in the Boston Weaver’s Guild.


After completing her Social work training, she worked in adult psychotherapy and then in the inpatient pain management unit at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. She went on to found an outpatient Pain Management Program at Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, Massachusetts. and then was an individual psychotherapist in private practice for more than 10 years. Later in her career she focused her practice on children, working as a Counselor and psychotherapist in the Lynn Public Schools and most recently as a psychotherapist at the MGH Health Center in Revere.


Sandy was predeceased by her son Bradley in 2002. She is survived by her husband Peter, her father Ivor Thompson and her son, Gregory Kirkpatrick and his wife Erin of Newton; her daughter in law Bara (Jichova) Kirkpatrick of New York City; her brother John Thompson of Providence, RI, his daughters Amy Thompson Slater and and Melissa Thompson Bastin; her sister Carol Lynn Thompson Courcier and her husband Bruce of Falmouth and their children Caitlyn, Sarah and Robert Courcier.


Mrs. Kirkpatrick’s Funeral Services will be held at the Church of St. Andrew, 135 Lafayette St., Marblehead, on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 1:30P.M. Her visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (corner of North St.(Rt 114)) Salem on Friday from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
