John Sabataz, age 83, of Hudsonville, after a short but courageous battle with leukemia, was called to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, peacefully, listening to his favorite style of music, polka. John was born on June 22, 1930 in Fruitport, MI. He grew up in Muskegon and after serving in the US Navy went to work at General Motors where he met the love of his life, Ethel, and married on August 1, 1959. He retired from GM after 40 years of service in 1989. John fully enjoyed life and had many hobbies including golf, playing his accordion, and singing with his band, “The Polka Pals”, drinking coffee with “The Beechridge Boys”, and watching his daughter, Vicki, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. He was very active in his family’s life, dearly loved by many, and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 sisters; grandson, Ryan Scholten; great grandson, Josiah Scholten. Surviving are his wife, Ethel; his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Allan Scholten; grandsons, Scott (Allison) Scholten, Tony (Trisha) Scholten; great grandchildren, Skylar, Gabby, Morgan, Jed, Sophia, and Max Scholten. As per his wishes cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Holy Redeemer Parish, 2700 Baldwin Street, Jenison, MI 49428. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the VanderLaan Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 P.M. and on Saturday from 10 to 11 A.M. at church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
