Daniel J. Bona, age 72, of Salem, husband of Diane (Busteed) Bona, passed away after battling a long illness on Friday January 17th at North Shore Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Born in East Boston, he was the son of the late Daniel J and Mildred (Martel) Bona. He was educated in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School in 1959. Immediately upon graduation, Dan enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served and was Honorably Discharged. Following his discharge, Dan and Diane were married on November 17, 1963 and recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary.
Dan worked at Devcon in Danvers for many years and was a machinist at Phillips Lighting, which became Norelco, for over 20 years. He also worked at Tucker Engineering in Peabody. Mr. Bona coached baseball in Salem for several years with the Wildcats, Giants, and the Larks in Pony League.
Dan loved to cook and his meatballs were always a hit and requested by family and friends for any type of party or celebration they were having, but his favorite past time was enjoying his grandchildren, which were his pride and joy. He was always there at their games from youth sports through high school where he became an avid Fenwick Football fan and was very excited he was able to be in attendance at Gillette Stadium to see Bishop Fenwick win a State Championship this past December. He also looked forward to watching his favorite T.V. shows, N.C.I.S. and Criminal Minds on a weekly basis. His easygoing personality and sense of humor will be missed by everyone.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his two children, Salem Police Lt. Stephen Bona and his wife Dina, as well as his daughter, Julie and her husband, Joseph Vetro, his grandchildren, Joseph, Nicholas, and Stephanie Bona all of Peabody, a brother, Edward Morin and his wife Patricia of Grand Rapids, Michigan, a sister Mildred Adare of Fitchburg, a sister-in-law Mary Lou and her husband, Paul LaRoque of Salem, a sister in law Camille Bona of East Boston, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers; William Morin of Fitchburg and Robert Bona of East Boston.
