Dean Austin Henneberg, 90, of Belvue, Kansas passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Dean was born in rural Pottawatomie County on the family farm near Wheaton, Kansas on April 22, 1923. He was the son of Louis W. and Esther L. (Force) Henneberg. He attended schools in Wheaton graduating from Wheaton High School in 1941. After high school Dean joined the United States Navy during World War II, where he served on the USS Kimberly. While in the Navy he was the recipient of three bronze stars in the Pacific Campaign and one bronze star in the Philippine Liberation. After his honorable discharge Dean returned home and moved to the Belvue, Kansas area in January of 1946. On May 5, 1945 in Topeka, Kansas, Dean was united in marriage to Marjorie A. McKee. She survives at the home.
Dean worked as a farmer for 12 years before going to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 27 years before his retirement in 1984, but was always a farmer at heart. He enjoyed working with his farm animals, listening to Ray Price music, morel mushroom hunting and camping on the family farm “the sandpile” with his wife and kids. Dean always had a nickname for all his favorite things and most importantly loved his family the most. He was a member of the Belvue Methodist Church for over 60 years and the American Legion Harold Johnson Post-Wamego for 55 years.
Dean is also survived by his son Ronald Henneberg and wife Anna of Hoyt, Kansas; his daughter: Linda Snyder and husband Dave of Topeka, Kansas; one brother: Milton Henneberg (Dorothy) of Wheaton, KS; three sisters: Fay Wirt of Clay Center, KS, Vera Marten of Onaga, KS and Eva Brunkow (Duane) of Topeka, KS; three grandchildren: Michelle Warnow, Jeff Henneberg (Tanna) and Justin Henneberg (Lysha) and six great-grandchildren: Jordan, Kentrell and Lexi Warnow and Xavier, Guinevere and Nimue Henneberg. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Smith and Fran Welch.
Funeral services for Dean will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow at the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery with military honors. A visitation for Dean will be held on Sunday, December 29, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
