Eugene "Gene" Hiller, 87, son of Anna and Christian Hiller, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2013 with family by his bedside.

Gene grew up in Bronx, NY and lived in Wantagh for 47 years before moving to the Cedar Crest community in Pompton Plains, NJ where he spent the remaining five years of his life.


Gene was employed by AT&T for 37 years, and upon retiring he worked an additional 15 years for CBS in Manhattan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Hornet during World War II and the U.S.S. Van Valkenvurgh during the Korean War.

At Cedar Crest Gene was an avid card player and loved playing cribbage, dominos and puzzles with his fellow residents. He volunteered at Bingo, the TV Studio and making crosses for the residents of Mountainview. He was excellent at solving Jumbles without writing anything down.

His most cherished role was being a devoted husband, father and papa to his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and partaking in all the various family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris; his four devoted children and their spouses, Gerry and Patty Hiller, Patty and Tony Hatalla, Kathi and Rusty Rose, and Jeannie and Tony Koproski; his eight loving grandchildren, Kerri Zwolak, Christopher Hiller, Kristen and Nicole Hatalla, Darrel, Traci and Kelli Steckler, and Steven Koproski; one great-granddaughter, Claire Zwolak; his brother, Walter Hiller; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held 9 am Tuesday at the Cedar Crest Village Chapel, 1 Cedar Crest Drive, Pompton Plains, NJ. Burial will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY. Visiting hours will be Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Cedar Crest Village Chapel.
