Memorial services for Kenneth Owen Wilson, 78, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, located at 904 19th St., in Canyon with the Rev. Damon Deaton officiating. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home of Amarillo.
Dr. Wilson died Nov. 17, 2013.
He was born July 7, 1935, on an Indian Reservation near Winslow, Ariz., to Cecil and Emma Johnson Wilson. His family soon moved to the Amarillo area, where he spent most of his school years. He was a member of the first baseball team of Kids Inc., in Amarillo. He moved to McLean in 1951 and graduated from McLean High School. He married Barbara Williams on Oct. 10, 1952. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Dr. Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from West Texas A&M University and his master’s and doctorate from Texas A&M University. He taught at A&M for three years and came to WTAMU in 1963. He retired in 1997. While teaching in the agriculture and nursing departments, he managed the WTAMU dairy and provided support for dairy and cattle ranchers in the region for 42 years. He was fortunate to be an Honorary State Farmer of the Vocational Agriculture (Future Farmers of America) and received seven outstanding School of Agriculture teaching recognitions.
Dr. Wilson received a Teaching Excellence Award from WTAMU and three national awards bestowed by the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. One of these included being chosen from all of the agriculture teachers from colleges south of the Mason-Dixon line and another was one of three given in the entire United States of America. On March 23, 2000, he was honored to receive Professor Emeritus recognition for his excellence in teaching and commitment to his students.
Dr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Eddie Wilson; a sister, Rudy Koffman; and a brother, Cecil Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two sons, Mark Wilson and wife, Dee Ann, and Brian Wilson and wife, Sarah; a daughter-in-law, Terri Wilson; nine grandchildren, Kristen McKinney and husband, Andrew, Joe Dan, Nicholas, Katherine, Madeline, Caisey, Gabriel, Wynter and Lorrna; two brothers, Eldon Wilson and Paul Phillips; and sister-in-law Ruthie Wilson.
