James F. Bohn

Born: November 25, 1924
Died: November 14, 2013

U.S. VeteranJames F. “Jim” Bohn, 88, passed peacefully into God's care the afternoon of Thursday November 14, 2013. Jim was the son of Albert and Cecilia (nee Goeden) Bohn. He was raised on a farmette just south of town on Highway P. He attended West Bend schools and was a member of the West Bend High School Class of 1942. As a high school student, he took up beekeeping. This hobby became a lifelong source of enjoyment. He sold honey to friends and passers-by from his parent’s home, regaled friends and family with beekeeping trivia, and mentored younger apiculturists in the county beekeepers association.

Jim served in the United States Army’s Finance Corps. After his discharge, he put his skills to work at the West Bend Mutual. He joined the company in 1948 when it had 15 employees. He delighted in his work at the Mutual. Jim was responsible for the selection of risks that the company would insure. Jim was the first Mutual employee to earn the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation. He particularly enjoyed mentoring new employees in the insurance business. He retired in 1985 as the Manager of the Property Underwriting Department. In his retirement he kept up with his many former coworkers, proctored professional insurance examinations at the Mutual, and enjoyed participating in Retired Insurance Brains (RIBs). At the time of his death, Jim was the oldest living retiree of the Mutual.

In 1962, Jim married the love of his life, Rosemary Suess of Milwaukee. The couple raised two children in their home on Seventh Avenue: Mary Louise Schlough (husband Bradley) of Madison, WI and James George Bohn (wife Sue) of Carlisle, MA. Jim is survived by his two children; his grandchildren Ben, Sarah and Margaret; his brother Eugene (wife Marilyn) of Kewaskum, WI; and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by Rosemary and his brothers Robert, George and Paul.

Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed getting together with his many friends and relatives in the area. He was among the first members of St. Francis Cabrini parish and was active in the Knights of Columbus, having had a lead role in raising funds for the construction of the clubhouse north of town. He enjoyed reading the West Bend News, the Wall Street Journal and the Milwaukee Journal, doing the word puzzle in nearly every issue. Jim was also an avid gardener, fisherman and enjoyed travel. Each year, the family would take a two week long car trip to a different region of the United States. In retirement, he and Rosemary traveled with the Elderhostel program, participated in the Young at Heart and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. He will be remembered for his good cheer and kindness towards others.

Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday November 22 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend. Visitation will held from 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. The Mass will begin at 12 noon with Father Enrique Hernandez presiding. Internment at Holy Angels Cemetery will follow the Mass.

Donations may be made to St. Francis Cabrini or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of Southeastern Wisconsin.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff of Waunakee Manor for providing comfort in his final years.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family. On-line guestbook and condolences available at www.schmidtfuneralhome.com.
