Doug M. Powers, age 67 of Fremont, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. Doug was born on June 4, 1946 in Bailey to Knox Clare and Nelda Bell (Britton) Powers and graduated from Fremont High School and later from Western Michigan University with a teaching degree in business administration. Doug later married Mindy Shafer on March 15, 1986 in Fremont. Doug had been a part owner of Safeway Lumber in Fremont and later built and operated the Whippletree Restaurant for many years along with building and selling several homes in the Fremont area. Doug had enjoyed raising horses in his younger years and most recently enjoyed attending auctions. Doug was always willing to lend a helping hand to his many friends and always found time to visit with friends over a cup of coffee. Doug’s true enjoyment however was his grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his wife, Mindy of Fremont; his children, Matt (Liz) Powers of Fremont; Mark (significant other, Molly) Powers of Rockford; Martha (Won Chae) Matthews of San Diego, California; his grandchildren, Macey Powers, Maxx Powers, Liam Matthews, Isobel Matthews; Ivy Matthews; Ellie Powers; his brothers, John (Opal) Powers of Fremont; Joe (Roni) Powers of Fremont; special niece and nephew, Britt Chapman of Altamont Springs, Florida and Beth Giddings of Boca Raton, Florida; several other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Knox and Nelda and his sister, Mary Ann Powers.

VISITATION : Monday, November 11, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8pm and 1 hour prior to the funeral services at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL MEMORIAL SERVICES : Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : To the grandchildren’s education fund, c/o Crandell Funeral Home.
