Lendell "Len" Vanderburg

U.S. VeteranLendell “Len” Lloyd Vanderburg, age 79, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 in Pine Grove surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Port, OK on July 19, 1934 to the late Lloyd and Virginia (Rippee) Vanderburg, a farmer and a housewife. During the Depression his father found work in California, after which he moved the family to Oakland, CA, when Len was nine.

Len attended high school and college at the Academy of Christian Education and Patten School of Religion in Oakland. Shortly after high school graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Rose Swanson on November 26, 1953 in Oakland, CA. In 1963 he started his 23 year career as a California Highway Patrol officer. He valued the importance of education and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice from the University of San Francisco, while working full time and raising his children.

In 1977 he moved his family to Walnut Creek, retired from the CHP in 1987, and settled in Pine Grove in 2001. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed sports of all kinds, but especially riding dirt bikes, motorcross, traveling with the CHP RV group, hunting, and sharpening his marksmanship skills. Len enjoyed listening to music and singing, especially the southern gospel genre.

Len was a man of honor and integrity and his faith in God and his family were his priorities. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Len is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Rose Vanderburg; daughters, Marilyn Puryear and her husband, Bill; Karen Puccio and her husband, Richard all of Pine Grove, CA, Nancy Kraft and her husband, Karl of Leander, TX; sister, Barbara Fediuc of Oakland, CA; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday, November 1, 2013, 1:00 PM at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson, CA. Interment will be at the Garden of Valor, Sunset View Cemetery in Jackson.
